Proposed Industrial Heritage Park + Interpretive Centre at 66 Mohawk Street, Brantford
This new Interpretive Park is designed to commemorate and represent Brantford’s industrial heritage.
The Canadian Industrial Heritage Centre (CIHC) approached MMMC Architects with the intention of creating an Interpretive Centre and Park at the former location of the Cockshutt Plow Company at 66 Mohawk Street in Brantford. Of the original industrial complex, two historical structures remain on this site: a Time Keeper’s Office (c.1912) and the Office Entrance Portico built in 1903. As an advocate for conservation, CIHC sought to preserve these existing structures as part of Brantford’s Cultural Heritage, while giving new recreational and educational relevancy to the site. The challenge then, was to thoughtfully adapt this historic property into a continuing contemporary Interpretive Park and Centre, while protecting its heritage value.
Five images were produced by MMMC Architects for CIHC as promotional material both to gain support from city officials and planners and to help propel their project forward. The vision includes the Time Office being repurposed as an Interpretive Center for visitors; Cockshutt Plow Company Office Portico with an attached amphitheater for performances; an Interpretive Park with permanent outdoor displays of historical equipment and machinery; a central plaza area and open area to host festivals or to be used for plowing demonstrations; Seating area for large groups of local school children.
