“Patty’s Place” Acclaim Health Dementia Care Centre

The new Acclaim Health “Patty’s Place” Dementia Care Centre has transformed dementia care in Halton Region.

This project converted a large industrial building into a multi-faceted hub that includes an Adult Day Program for people living with dementia; an Adult Day  Program for frail older adults, caregiver support areas, 8-bed short stay respite beds, a year-round recreation garden and administrative space. The Centre includes a 3D immersive technology room – the first of its kind in Canada, designed specifically for people with dementia. The short stay respite program for those with dementia is a first and only in Halton Region.

Best practices in dementia friendly design were incorporated into the building. The aim of the design is to create a comfortable space where day program “members” and their caregivers can feel safe, confident and energized. Abundant daylight, landscaping and familiar natural textures are incorporated throughout the building. The site itself was reconfigured to allow easy access, weather protected entries and secure outdoor spaces.

The essential design elements were developed through an extensive co-design process with Acclaim Health staff and community members.
