Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Elementary School
This award winning First Nation school, now called Kikendaasogamig Elementary School, is designed and sited to respond to the remoteness of the location and the rugged beauty of the west shores of Georgian Bay. Great care was taken to respond respectfully to the sensitivities of the land and the culture of the First Nation. Both form and structure of the building were extensively discussed and developed with the participation of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation.
The choice of natural building materials – wood – garnered this school two design awards: WoodWORKS! “Juror’s Choice Award” and the “Sansin” Wood Design Award.
